Modernism is Barcelona´s main attraction, to the point where many of its modernist buildings are recognized by the UNESCO as a patrimony of humanity. The Route of Modernism to witch the City Council and deputation of Barcelona have given a great impulse, was created with the ambition of facilitating the discovery of this rich patrimony to the citizens and visitors.

Modernism is a cultural movement that arose in the west at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The word means "taste for what is modern" and had already been used in its time. It defined the most renovating trend of literature, theatre, architecture, the fine arts, decoration, furniture and other objects.
According to the country in question, the movemet was given different names. Es an example in Germany "Jugendstil".
All of them are parallel but not equal. Particularly the Catalan one included specific trends and is, of all, the most varied and long-lasting of them.
