THE CATALAN FOLK DANCE

One describes the Catalan folk dance as a Sardana. The Sardanes are primarily common in the Països Catalanss in which one finds her everywhere there where Catalans meet for celebrating.
The dancers compose themselves at their hands in the circle, like in a round dance, the circle usually moves on the left and around to the right in changing speed, however, slowly concentratedly and seriously.
As a national symbol of the Catalans it was forbidden to dance the Sardana under Franco.
Catalonia's national dance is more complicated than it seems. The dancers must count out the short and long steps and jumps exactly. Therefore perhaps this concentrated facial expression. The cobla, an eleven-man orchestra with a leading musician who plays the a three holey flute (flabiol) and a little drum (tabal), five wood and five brass players, provides the music.
The Sardana is listed at most celebrations and meetings which are special and lasting for some days, the aplecs. She is danced every Sunday at 18.30 hours on the Plaça de Sant Jaume in Barcelona.
