Description of Garrotxa
|
In a distance of about 50 km from Girona, thirty volcano ninepins rise with craters and beech woods between streams of lava and spectacular basalt ravines whose emergence goes back to volcanic eruptions lasting millennia. At the same time a tour trough this vulcanic landscape of "El Parque Natural de la Garrotxa" is a trip to the world of fire and ashes. Both elements have created these astonishing formations and numerous villages are integrated into this landscape.

This volcano landscape unique wirhin Europe arose 11 000 years ago when the last eruption took place. The volcanos are inactive since then, not gone out, however, completely. This geological leaving shaft is run through by numerous ways which leads past at view places, castles, monuments and churches which impresses the observer with her beauty.
Approximately 30 volcano ninepins are got very well despite her considerable age. At most, the crater is visible and to be more precise -- depending on where the lava left, moved on either the ninepin or also lateral centered.
|
The volcano ninepins are high between 10 and 160 meters and have a base diameter from 300 to 1500 meters. They consist of clinkers and Lapilli, the regional chalk form, with stored lava bubbles. Explosion columns, Vulcanit deposits and petrified volcano ash, also have to be observed. The River Valleys were flooded by thick lava approximately thirty times. The lava was several meters thick.
