|
Montblanc is a town in the centre of Catalonia, situated around 100 kilometers from the regional capital, Barcelona, and near of the Mediterranean coast and the Prades Mountains. It was founded by King Alfons I in 1163 and has a population of 6,200. Montblanc monumental heritage is, of course, the main tourist attraction of the town, and its greatest promotional asset. The great richness of its monumental legacy enabled Montblanc to be declared Monumental Artistic Ensemble in 1947. Perhaps the most striking construction is the medieval wall (14th century) which gives the town character and is at present the best conserved in Catalonia. It consists of thirty towers and various proches. But there are also a series of other interesting buildings, particularily the church Santa Maria.
